Hakuna Matata!

Jungle in London, Jungle in Paris
The Lion King Musical really brought the Jungle to London. And Rousseau's exhibition at the Tate modern brought me into his imaginary jungle.
Both are a celebration of humanity, of the human imagination.
Its been quite sometime since I've been to the theatre and I must say that I have been missing out so much. The movies can never compare to the theatre. I love how props are ornate, intricate and ingenious yet without taking away the need for some imagination.
Imagination.
In this age where our capacity to imagine is being diminished by Xboxes, Playstations and cable TV, the musical is a stunning reminder of the need to allow our brain to do what it is supposed to do. To Imagine, to Dream and to Think for itself.
The theatre is also a reminder of the need for human interaction. I love the direct transmission of human emotions from the actors onstage to the audience. In the highly digitised world we call home, that is something that is sorely lacking. It is probably the same genus that leads one to say "you can never fax a handshake". Nothing beats the human touch. Maybe the sci fi scenes of computers taking over the world are not so distant now. They may not enslave us directly but may do so indirectly, through making us less human, more mechanical, more computer. The theatre seems to be holding up against the onslaught of the cinema. But for how long? How long more till we sacrifice the theatre and all that it stands for on the alter of convenience or technological advancement? Just like what we did with the good ole fashioned hand written letter. Sacrificed in favour or email. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating that we turn back the clock on technology. I am just expressing my concern at the need to retain some humanity in human beings as we progress.
